It seems like every fall, right before the long, cold winter sets in we get a few warm days. The weather people call them unseasonably warm days but I consider these days to be little golden gifts from heaven. It's a great opportunity to store up lots happy sunlight and vitamin D before winter comes. Plus you can try to rake up all the leaves that have fallen.
The picture above doesn't even show a quarter of the leaves we've had this year. I've used a rake, a broom, even a wheelbarrow to try to corral some of these leaves but I've decided a leaf blower is my favorite. When I use one on the driveway, it gets things clean as a whistle, at least until the wind blows again. It does have some trouble with big clumps of wet leaves and the tiny mountains of acorns that accumulate on our driveway (after all it is only a glorified blow dryer) but for the most part my little leaf blower gets the job done. People generally bag up their leaves in paper bags for the green waste people to take away but we try to put as many as we can in our compost piles or use them as mulch. And we always leave a few big piles out so Josh can jump and swim around in them.
Josh also likes to help his daddy mow some of the leaves up with the lawnmower. He follows Jason dutifully around with his popper mower, making sure to stop at all the little "stop signs" he's posted. We love our imaginative little boy. And Jason's hearts leaps with joy when he thinks of the day when Josh will be able to run the real lawn mower all by himself.
The nice fall weather also gives us the chance to appreciate some of the autumn beauties around us. Here's a Japanese maple that lit up like it was plugged in and a quince hanging on its tree. The quinces ripen in late fall and smell absolutely heavenly. Too bad they are inedible. They do have some other uses and if you are curious about quinces, here's a previous post I did on our little tree.
All in all we're thankful for the warm, golden days of fall that help us get ready for winter. Especially today when it's raining.

I love fall in New York. The pictures are great, and the little maple is growing so fast.
