Treats in My Trunk

We went to the annual Trunk or Treat at church last weekend. I love these activities. The kids get to dress up and get candy and the parents don't have to stand outside forever in the cold, a definite bonus in these northern climes.

Here is Jane the Flower Fairy in our trunk. I placed her in there after struggling to hold her and pass out candy. I was only going to let her sit there for a minute while I found the baby Bjorn but she seemed so happy there I decided to let her stay.

Jason walked around with Josh and collected candy. Not to be left out, Jane decided to collect some candy for herself. She immediately reached into our candy bowl and got to work.

"If only I could figure out how to open these..."
As you can see, she tried several varieties to see if any of the packages had exploitable weaknesses. Josh's first Halloween was also his first birthday and we let him hold a package of candy while we roamed the neighborhood. Being a few months older than Jane is now, he was actually able to tear the package a little and suck out the chocolate (which had melted in his hot little hands). All this happened before we hand any clue so this year we kept a much closer eye on Jane. What is remarkable to me is that though neither child had eaten candy at this stage of their lives (as far as I know), they still seemed to instinctively sense that these shiny wrappers had something very desirable in them

When Josh completed his candy-collecting labors, he decided it would be fun to join Jane in the trunk. And though the inner workings of our trunk initially held the greatest interest to him...

...Jane soon helped him refocus on what was important. He clearly seems impressed by her enthusiasm.

When Josh was born on Halloween people used to joke and ask us if we got a "trick" or a "treat." Forget the bowl of candy, I think the sweetest treats in shiny wrappers in this trunk are my two little babies.

We have activities in the gym before the main trunking and treating. And somehow I got stuck with the job of announcing things. I managed to say "parents get the junk in your trunk ready"....I don't think anybody caught it though.
