Here is Jane's first birthday cake. Notice that it is not homemade. Why make my life difficult? I could have made something cute and princess-ish with artificial pink frosting and sprinkles but I figure I will have to make plenty of cakes like that in the future. I wanted something that tasted good. I told Jason to pick something out when he went to the store.
In case you are wondering, Truffle is not some cute nickname we came up with for Jane. Our grocery store bakery just likes to label its cakes...you know, in case someone mistakes it for a carrot cake or something. The label should have said super-chocolaty goodness. Anyway...we lit the thing up and starting singing in a terribly off-key manner. Who made up the Happy Birthday song and why is it impossible to make it sound nice? I bet that person hated birthdays and decided to make the worst-sounding, hardest-to-sing tune in the history of the universe. So here is Jane looking a little nervous. I don't know if it is our dreadful singing or the fact that we have just put a flaming object in front of her.

At some point she realized that all this fuss was for her and that was definitely a good thing! She broke into a huge smile and started to bob along to the "music," although how she was able to perceive a beat or even a melody is hard for me to fathom. Maybe other families have angelic or rousing versions of the Birthday song sung in their homes on these annual occasions. My childhood birthday song memories are filled with my mom covering her ears and wincing in pain as each sour note was hit while the kids giggled. I'm pretty sure my dad wasn't singing. I think he was just moving his lips. Who knows? Isn't Jane cute?

At this point Jane decided to follow in her mother's footsteps and embark on a love affair with fire. One of her tiny hands darted out the grasp the hypnotic flame. Luckily I was able to grab her hand before she burned herself.

When our tuneless song concluded, Jane rewarded our heroic efforts with gleeful applause. I think I would happily sing the hideous birthday song every day to see this.

Here is Jane making a valiant attempt to blow out her candles. I don't think she quite understood what I was asking her to do but she sure was trying hard. Look at that concentration!

We just can't get enough of our sweet little girl. We love you Jane!
Next post (hopefully): Let Them Eat Cake!

Jane has to be just about the cutest kid around. You guys have to come back soon, I feel like I barely got to see her at Christmas. Can't wait for the next post. There's something special about a kid's first slice of birthday cake. Maybe it's the frosting in the hair.
The Truffle cake cracks me up. That's one to remember. She is an adorable little girl...a pretty little princess. Happy Birthday Jane! By the way, have I told you how much I love her name? I really do.
Hope Truffle had a great birthday.
She's so cute, its amazing how fast they grow. It looks like she had a lot of fun, and I'm totally on board with the "parent" cake, she's not gonna care. As for the birthday song, you have not heard a horrible rendition until you've heard my in-laws sing it, they figure they can't sing on key so why try, they go the opposite and sing as horribly as they can! Its dreadful, I plug my ears and hope they don't bleed! Believe me, you would sound like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in comparison.
She is a little cutie! I am looking forwatd to playing with her in the nursery... it'll be here before you know it!
My stomach seriously growled when I saw the cake. No joke.
I think Jane looks like Heather! She is such a little cutie!
